This page just gives you a taster of the T4 Westfalia Camper.Eventhough the vehicle does not have the smiley face of the T2 or the retro feel of some of the T25s,the T4 supplies the quality of Westfalia with the reliability of Volkswagen enabling it to have the versatility to be used everyday.

The T4 was a departure from the rear engine vehicle being front wheel drive like any other car.

The engine of the T4 is larger,certainly people would have liked to have seen this bigger engine in the T25. Of Audi heritage the engine is 5 Cylinder in both the Petrol and the Diesel. With the development of the T4, owners very much favoured the 2.4, 5 Cylinder Diesel. They are longer lasting engines with modern technology. This allows them much more mileage.

The Westfalia T4 Camper started in 1991 with the California, it had a similar layout to the T25 California / Atlantic. However it is able to provide more storage space as the engine was no longer in the rear.

The T4 California was available in both Hitop and elevating roof as a 4 berth. It provided a number of differences to the T25:

The Tap for the sink can be adjusted to give different water jets.

The Tap can also be used outside of the van if the hose is taken through the opening window behind the kitchen unit.

The Cooker may be a two burner hob which uses spirit rather than gas. The canisters are filled with spirit and lit just as gas. However Gas Hobs are also available.

Behind the drivers seat is a fuse/ trip system for the electrics.

The fridge holds 40 litres.

Table can be stored under the Rock and Roll bed.

The Rock and Roll bed can be completely removed by sliding it out to create a really large loading space. In addition the board on which the rear cushion sits can also be removed.

A middle portion of the Rock and Roll bed can be removed to transport long items such as skis.

Next to the Rock and roll bed is a metal safe box with Key for storage of valuables.

It is possible to get a middle seat with seat belts for the van to sit two more people, this slides on runners and is easily fitted and removed.

The Hi top T4 can achieve 25+ MPG, an elevating roof version will achieve slightly more.

On the elevating roof Campers the roof is raised using a lever at the front of the van above the rear view mirror.

The windows in the Hitop have built in flyscreens and blinds.

Westfalia did produce a number of conversion and in 1995 they took a leap in comfort and produced the EXCLUSIVE.

This provided a cooking area in the rear of the Camper ,seperate to the lounging area. In addition it also provided a toilet cubilcle with built in toilet and sink.
